From school-based trainee to lifelong career

Attending a small local school in Mary Valley, 16-year-old Robert George, wasn’t sure what he wanted to do, so he signed up for a 2-week holiday job at Nolan Meats in Gympie.

Robert enjoyed the hands-on job so much he decided to turn his school holidays hobby into a school-based traineeship, working while he completed Year 11 and 12.

“My hunger for learning about the red meat processing industry came from my school–based work experience at Nolan Meats,” Robert said.

Meet Robert

A career of learning has helped Robert set up his career and life in Gympie. Robert is proud to have a job that supports his family and daughters.

Robert was 20 years old when he built his first house, and since then he has worked to build his second house, helping him to continue supporting his family in the future.

“Without working at Nolan meats and putting in the hours I wouldn’t have been able to build my first house at such an early age”, Robert said.

Robert is sharing his story as part of the More to Meat campaign to show there are opportunities for everyone in the red meat processing industry, and they’re on Gympie’s doorstep.
