Locals help to raise the steaks for their community

Red meat processing has a long and proud history in regional Australia, and processors are an essential part of the nation’s food supply chain. Working with our farmers and truckies, red meat processors package and produce high-quality red meat at world-class standards for everyone to enjoy.

But there is more to the industry than you might think.

For the first time, independent data published in the More to Meat Our ‘Steak’ in Australia Report reveals the true number of Aussie jobs and the economic activity generated by red meat processing.

In 2022, red meat processors were estimated to support a staggering 138,000 jobs and $7.6b in annual household income in Australia, with each of these jobs supporting a family.

Red meat processors help to provide local economic opportunities, creating fulfilling, long-term careers where you can learn valuable skills in a safe and supportive environment.

A job in the industry helps a family buy a house, pay for their kid’s education, and build a life in the local community.

These opportunities matter for people like Julie, who works at her local processor, Thomas Foods, in Tamworth.

Julie started working in red meat processing a few days a week and now she has developed the skills and training over 20 years to become a leader in her organisation.

Jobs like these are important for regional communities, because it also means other small businesses can survive and thrive.

By working together, our industry is proud to play a big part in building Australia’s reputation as the home of high-quality red meat products that the rest of the world enjoys.

Whether you’re interested in building a career in red meat processing, or simply enjoying our delicious red meat products at home, supporting Australia’s red meat   processing industry will help to keep regional communities strong.
