Monbeef re-opening creates 100 red meat processing jobs in Cooma

The Monbeef red meat processing facility in Cooma officially re-opened its doors in October after closing in 2020 due to challenges from the pandemic.

The re-opening is a massive boost to the Cooma community with Monbeef aiming to have a workforce of close to 100 people at full operation.

Peter Holgate, CEO of Monbeef, has been with the company for more than 20 years and said: “We are excited to restart operations in Cooma. Our focus is on building local jobs and producing high-quality products for both the domestic and export market.”

Monbeef’s Cooma facility is a good example of why there is more to the red meat processing industry than meets the eye.

Monbeef’s jobs contribution will also create other jobs in the red meat supply chain and provide a range of skills and training opportunities across the industry.

For every red meat processor there are thousands of jobs for farmers, butchers, truck drivers and tradies. Collectively, the red meat industry supports a total of 138,000 jobs in Australia.

This economic activity is replicated across the entire country, with more than 300 communities supported by red meat processing in Australia.

There is an exciting future for red meat processing in Cooma and the rest of Australia. It is an industry on the forefront of innovation and produces a world class product locally and it’s a great Australian industry we can all be proud of.

The More to Meat campaign will continue to highlight the important role of red meat processors – and their staff – in the communities in which they operate it.
