Thomas Foods supporting Bourke with upgrade to local processor

Red meat processing is an essential industry to many regional towns and cities.

Employment from red meat processors helps to support the local supply chain too, including truck drivers, butchers and everything in between.

That is why Thomas Foods’ investment in Bourke, NSW, is so important for the town.

Thomas Foods International (TFI) has commenced its $60 million upgrade of its small stock red meat processing facility located in the North West of New South Wales.

The investment and upgrade will allow the facility to significantly increase production.

This will have major flow-on effects, benefiting not only regional employment opportunities, but also the processing facility’s international exports and long-term capabilities.

The upgrades will include a new 1800 square metre cold store facility, a new refrigeration system, electrical transformer and generators plus a 1200-carcase freezer. There is also a plan for a new skin storage and processing facility.

The upgrade means that the meat processor, and the industry, is here to stay.

TFI Chief Executive Anthony Stewart said that most of the livestock processed at the site currently went to international markets, and emphasised the cold store and logistics capability on helped the company maintain the world’s highest standards of red meat.

Keeping all the steps of red meat processing on site will end future costs of using external facilities and bring more jobs to Bourke.
